President Museveni meets Buganda bishops

President Yoweri Museveni has met with Church of Uganda bishops from Buganda region to discuss poverty eradication in the region.

During the Friday meeting at his farm in Kisozi, the president also pledged sh500m for the SACCO that the bishops formed and.

He also pledged sh100m for the upgrading of the Namugongo martyrs shrine in preparation for Pope Francis’ visit to Uganda.

The retired Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo, is the chairman of the committee in charge of the rehabilitation of Namugongo Martyrs shrine and construction of a modern museum.

Museveni commended the clerics for their commitment to the fight against poverty.

“I am pleased to note that the bishops of Buganda region are committed to eradicate poverty,” he said.

First Lady Janet Museveni also attended the meeting.

The prelates and their wives were led by Bishop Jackson Matovu of Central Buganda Diocese.

Articulating the need to fight subsistence farming methods by replacing them with commercial farming, Museveni told the bishops that five major sectors such as agriculture, industries, ICT, services and public service are the originators of wealth, which the country needs to grow.

 “We must fight against subsistence farming and embark on commercial agriculture," he said.
