Training in Kiswahili language starts

The acting Minister of East African Affairs, Shem Bagaine has launched the first class of 50 pupils in Kiswahili language training at Management Training & Advisory Center Uganda (MTAC).

Bagaine said that after Uganda signed the protocol of the East African community, Kiswahili language was chosen as a common language that would make communication within the member states easier.

The training is free and it will take a period of three months with three days training every week.

The acting minister mentioned that Kiswahili commonly used at all the neigbours of the Ugandan borders, and that measures are underway to have the language taught at all stages in schools.

Bagaine also pointed to the language’s potential in business transactions across the borders.

Currently, English is considered Uganda’s national language but with the current interventions, Kiswahili could replace English – a language introduced by the colonial masters.
