Uganda in top gear for international cultural week

Uganda will from March 13, to March 21, 2014 2014 join the rest of the World to mark the International cultural week.

While addressing journalists recently, State Minister for the elderly and the disabled, Suleiman Madada, said this year Uganda would place emphasis on the Anti-Pornography Act to make sure women are decently dressed.

He added that there would also be a shift in focus to the negative cultural values and harmful practices that undermine women like the Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The week will be marked under the theme “Culture: a Tool for Job Creation: Bridging the Gaps.”

“Our intention is to raise awareness worldwide about the importance of intercultural dialogue in diversity, build a world community of individuals committed to support diversity and also to learn to live together through co-operation among people from different cultures,” he said.

He also noted that the culture day would provide an opportunity to create awareness in development, and also provide opportunities for job creation and income generation. 

During the cultural week, there will be a dialogue with university students in Kampala on the contribution of cultural industries to job creation, a drama festival at the National Theatre from March 16 to 18, 2014, poetry, traditional games, food and indigenous knowledge exhibitions, all of which will be aimed at showcasing job opportunities in Uganda’s cultural industries.

The main celebrations will be held at the Busoga Square in Jinja.
