Janet lauds MTN for aiding the needy

A total of sh400m from the MTN marathon will be used to provide clean water to Moruita and Nabilatuk sub counties in Nakapiririt district, Karamoja.

Receiving the cheque at the Serena Hotel yesterday, Karamoja Affairs Minister Janet Museveni commended MTN and its marathon partners New Vision, Rwenzori, Stanbic and Huawei for teaming up to help the needy.

“I have keenly followed the activities MTN has engaged in over the years especially in areas of Corporate Social Responsibility and I must commend you for a job well done.”

She also noted that Karamoja is a worthy beneficiary because of the water constraints of the area.

The First lady said the growth of the marathon into one of Uganda’s biggest fundraising events was proof of the organisers’ impeccable accountability and transparency.

Similar water projects have been started in Amuria and Kiryandongo over the past two years.

MTN Uganda Managing Director Mazen Mroue underlined the communication company’s commitment to helping the under privileged.

“We take pride in the fact that every participant in the 2013 marathon whose theme was run for water, joined hands with MTN to make a difference in the lives of people in Karamoja.”

He explained that the water project will include 800 bio filters in schools, eight boreholes, six ferro cement tanks and training of women groups in water jar construction.

ICT State Minister Nyombi Tembo also commended MTN and its partners.

Responding to Mroue on some of the challenges being faced by MTN like vandalism and other high business costs, Tembo said government is addressing the issues.

The tenth edition of the marathon was held last year. Kenyans Dominic Kimwetich (men) and Gladys Kipsoi (women) won the 42 kilometer event that had its flag off and finish at the Kololo ceremonial ground.

Organisers yesterday pledged to do everything within their means to ensure that the 2014 race is also a major attraction.
