Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) will not participate in the Kampala mayoral by-election set for next month, until the High Court makes a final ruling regarding the fate of the ousted Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

The Electoral Commission (EC) last week, set April 17 as the date for holding a by-election to fill the position that fell vacant following the impeachment of Erias Lukwago.

EC Chairperson Badru Kiggundu announced March 31 and April 1 as nomination dates for contenders.

Addressing journalists on Monday at the Party headquarters at Najjanakumbi in Kampala, Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Wafula Oguttu said FDC would not participate in what they called an illegal exercise before the case has been disposed of.

“It is very unfortunate the Electoral Commission has set a date for a by- election to replace Lukwago well aware that there is still a pending case in court. FDC will not be party of this irregularity,” said Wafula.

The election body however, said they had received a letter from KCCA notifying them of a vacant position that needed to be filled.
