The Judiciary will on Thursday receive the 2013 Public Sector Innovations Award in recognition of its efforts in improving service delivery.

The ceremony, to be graced by the Acting Chief Justice, Steven Kavuma, will be held at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The award is in recognition of the Judiciary’s Small Claims Procedure; a mechanism of solving civil disputes on claims not exceeding sh10m. The award is a brainchild of the  Public Service ministry.

Such a procedure, which is informal can be completed in one day, without the involvement of lawyers.

Supported by the Danish Government through its development flagship Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), the Small Claims Procedure is operational in the courts of Mengo, Masaka, Kabala, Arua, Mbale, Makindye, Jinja, Mbarara, Nakawa, Lira and Nabweru.

The procedure is scheduled to be introduced to other parts of the country in the course of the year.
