The Atomic Energy Council, the body that regulates peaceful application of ionizing radiation has noted that many medical facilities are operating without licenses and can be a danger to public health.

Ionizing radiation is a form of energy which is emitted from radioactive sources and can also be generated from radiation emitting equipment like x-ray machines used in hospitals.

The council has laid down several plans to streamline these activities among them exposing the non-compliant facilities.

Deogratias Luwalira, the council chief executive officer encouraged the public to use those facilities which have been licensed.

“We can guarantee the public’s safety if they use facilities licensed by us. We also appeal to those using ionizing radiation to notify the council to get authorization if they have not done so. When we inspect we tell you to correct where things are not good,” said Luwalira.

This is a body corporate under the ministry of energy. The council is the policy organ with a secretariat headed by a CEO.

The duty of the council is to regulate peaceful application of ionizing radiation to provide for safety of individuals, society and environment from its dangers
