Uganda has received a sh487m grant from the Japanese government towards improvement of water coverage and sanitation in three districts.

The beneficiaries of the grant are Soroti, Kole and Oyam districts.

The grant will support the construction of 13 deep wells in the northern districts of Kole and Oyam. It will support the construction of 12 boreholes in eastern district of Soroti.

Speaking at the signing of the contracts, Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, Junzo Fujita, intimated that many people in northern Uganda lack access to safe drinking water.

The projects will construct boreholes and wells that will avert the problem, he said.

Simon Peter Egadu, the coordinator Pentecostal Assemblies of God Soroti, said they are faced with a water problem.

“The average rate of access to safe water remains low at only 58% in Arapai, Gweri, Kamuda and Tubur Sub-counties. The intervention will provide safe water in these areas,” he said.
