Five countries have so far confirmed their participation in the second World Islamic Weightlifting Championships slated for Kampala. The competition will be held March 27- April 4.

Elite weightlifters from Turkey, Turkistan, Syria, Libya and Saudi Arabia will join their Ugandan rivals at the competition whose preparations are already in top gear.

Uganda Weightlifting Federation (UWF) president Salim Musokes said that the tournament’s organising committee had confirmed the MTN Arena, Lugogo as venue.

The official said that the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation sanctioned competition is expected to have athletes from over 20 countries.

“The sitting arrangement at Lugogo was the biggest advantage over other venues proposed,” Musoke stated.

He added, “Imperial Group of Hotels will provide accommodation for the participants.” Uganda’s preparation for the event will enter a new phase with the last qualifier at Kasubi Physique Gym tomorrow.

A team of 10 weightlifters will represent the country at the competition
