Justice Julia Sebutinde believes the ministry of public service ought to recognize health workers who have upgraded their degrees or credentials.

She argues that such recognition provides a realistic sense of motivation for working harder.

At the 4th graduation ceremony of International Health Sciences University ( IHSU), Sebutinde, who is the university’s chancellor, said it is “discouraging” if a health worker’s academic upgrade does not translate to better pay or higher ranking.

She said: “I think this is quite discouraging. If I was a public health worker I would not see any incentive either to remain in such an institution if it meant that the hard work I have done is not going to be recognized on the ground.

Making close reference to public health, the chancellor advised the public service to find ways of making the situation right.

Dr. Alex Coutinho, the executive director Infectious Disease Institute (IDI) presided over the ceremony which saw 200 students acquire degrees and diplomas in different fields.

He called on government to support health workers who are committed to serving in the rural areas.

“I want to call upon government to reward scholarships to rural health workers so that they can be motivated to stay and serve people patriotically,” he said.

The ED made mention of the need for health graduates to serve the ever-rising population of Uganda.

He challenged academic health faculties and the students to continuously review the curriculum, skills and competence taught.

In her remarks, Justice Sebutinde called on city residents to respect and appreciate Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for the good work they have done in the city like the construction of good roads.

Meanwhile Prof Scott Brown has been appointed the new vice chancellor of IHSU.
