Fire razes 8 villages in Masindi

Fire has gutted over 600 hectares of sugarcane in Masindi district. The most affected Sub Counties are Bujenje and Kimengo.

Fire has gutted over 600 hectares of sugarcane in Masindi district. The most affected Sub Counties are Bujenje and Kimengo.


In Bujenje sub county over, 400 hectares of sugarcane have been wiped out in six villages.

The Saturday and Sunday fires affected the villages of Kikube, Balijukira, Kabahara, Kyabakama, Kyandangi and Kinyamurara in Bujenje and Sub County and Nyinazaramugongo in Kimengo Sub County.

The burnt sugarcane belongs to out growers who supply sugarcane to Kinyara Sugar Works Company Limited (KSWCL).
The loss is estimated at sh4b.

Cosmas Byaruhanga one of the affected farmers said, "I lost six hectares and that is about sh30m. Some farmers have lost even bigger than this. It pains.”

Benedicto Wandera, the LC1 chairperson, Kinyamurara village said that the fires also destroyed other food crop in gardens, while some people lost animals.

Robert Atugonza, the chairperson Masindi Sugarcane Growers Association (MASGA) does not rule out arson.
