Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) secretary general, Alice Alaso, has turned down her appointment as chairperson of public accounts committee of parliament.

Alaso gave lack of requisite experience as the reason for turning down the offer.

The Serere woman MP said she was not consulted before her appointment which was made by FDC president Mugisha Muntu on Wednesday.

The position was initially occupied by Kasiano Wadri who has been moved to government assurance committee in a recent reshuffle that appeared to be a complete overhaul of the leadership of all parliaments’ oversight committees.

In a statement Alaso said: "I thank NEC [the FDC national executive committee] for assigning me to chair PAC. Unfortunately, I am not able to take up this due to my inability and lack of expertise in figures.

“I am only a historian, social worker and policy analyst. If only I had been consulted, I would have informed NEC of my inadequacies earlier.

“I have no background in accounts, finance or auditing. Please re-assign.”

A senior official in party who preferred anonymity confirmed the development, and said the opposition party was trying to convince her to change her mind.

Aruu County MP, Odonga Otto Odonga, also turned down his appointment as shadow minister for internal affairs.

Aswa County MP, Reagan Okumu, was appointed Parliamentary Commissioner, effectively bringing Elijah Okupa’s two-and-a-half stint to an end.

Parliamentary rules of procedure obligate the opposition to review its leadership of oversight committees every after two-and-a-half years.
