trueThe Kyambogo University Council, the institution’s supreme decision making body has appointed Prof. Elly Katunguka-Rwakishaya the Acting Vice Chancellor (VC) of Uganda’s second biggest public university.

In a Council session Tuesday, outgoing Acting VC Associate Prof. Fabian Nabugomu handed over the instruments of power to Katunguka.

Nabugomu returns to his substantive role of Deputy VC in charge of Finance and Administration.

Last month, Kyambogo University appointed Prof. Katunguka as her Deputy Vice Chancellor (VC) in charge of Academic Affairs, making him the first deputy VC.

According to section 32 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, in the absence of the VC, the first Deputy VC (now Katunguka) performs the role of the VC.

However, it earlier emerged that Kyambogo staff wanted Nabugomu to stay on as Acting VC. He reportedly declined to continue serving as Acting VC, saying the law must take its course.

Nabugomu was earlier appointed Acting VC because Kyambogo was short of a substantive Deputy VC In charge of Academic Affairs, when outgoing VC Prof Isaiah Omolo Ndiege’s contract expired on January 11.

Before his appointment at Kyambogo, Katunguka was heading the Makerere University Directorate Research and Graduate Training, formerly the School of Graduate Studies.

During the council meeting, members also nominated names of three eminent scholars to replace outgoing Kyambogo University Chancellor Dr. Erick Tiyo Adriko, who is stepping down after eight years.

The names of the nominees that the university declined to reveal shall be forwarded to President Yoweri Museveni, who appoints the Chancellors of all Public Universities.

As the titular head of Kyambogo, the Chancellor presides at all ceremonial assemblies of the university and confers degrees and other academic tittles and distinctions of the institution.
