Gov't reviewing money lending laws

In light of ensuring that Uganda’s laws are in tandem with trends, the Uganda Law Reform Commission (ULRC) is currently reviewing a number of legislations.

These include the Money Lenders Act, Registration of Births and Deaths Act, the Prisons Act and the Electoral laws.

ULRC is also developing legislation to govern mobile money and internet banking transactions.

Participation of public
ULRC is now inviting members of the public to contribute to the process of reforming the laws, by participating in studies aimed at gathering the opinions of stakeholders regarding areas that need modification.

The Commission Wednesday released an Issues Paper highlighting areas that need opinions of Ugandans, in light of generating debate on the concerns on which consensus or general trend of views on how to improve the above laws can be discerned.

Methodology
Methods of data collection include interviews, literature review, comparative analysis with other jurisdictions, technical working groups and a national feedback and building workshop.

After data collection, the ULRC will propose draft amendment laws for the above laws that will subsequently be forwarded to the parliament for debate and eventual passing.
