Salary of over 500 Kyambogo staff delayed

At least 521 staff of Kyambogo University will have to wait until the end of this week to access their salary for last month.

In a statement issued on February 03, the Kyambogo University Human Resource Director, Godfrey Tumwesigye attributed the delay to the ongoing migration of the government payroll from Uganda Computer Services to the new Integrated Personnel and Payroll System (IPPS).

In 2012, Government directed the Ministry of Public Service to reconcile and clean up salary and pension payroll to remove all ghosts, as government toughened on corruption following the pension scam.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Public Service was to ensure that the pension and salary payrolls are migrated to IPPS by end of 2012, to eliminate diversion of funds.

However, for unknown reasons, some Government institutions were never subjected to the IPPS by the end of the slated period. Kyambogo is believed to be one of these institutions.

“Salaries of 521 members of Kyambogo University will be delayed. The Ministry of Public Service has informed us that the validation of records for the affected members of staff will go (went) on up to February 7,” Tumwesigye said in the statement.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Public Service has told Tumwesigye to in turn inform the staff that their salaries will be paid by Saturday this week (February 15, 2014).

Meanwhile, the affected staff have decried the delay in payment of their salaries, with some saying that they had earmarked it to pay school fees for their children some of whom resumed school this week.

They urge the Ministry of Public Service to keep its word and pay them by the end of this week so that they can offset their accumulated arrears and meet financial commitments.
