Demand for maize slows down

The price of maize flour has dropped in almost all Kampala markets, just ahead of the school term.

A kilogram that was at sh2000 retail price and sh1800 wholesale price at the close of 2013 has now dropped to sh1600 retail price and sh1400 wholesale price.

Allan Agaba, a trader at Nakasero market says that because of the South Sudan crisis, the demand for maize flour has been declining.

He explains that the low demand which has been coming from the consumers lately has left a lot of maize produce in surplus, forcing the traders to reduce the price so that they can sell out.

He also notes that usually at this time of the year the price of maize flour soars because of the start of the new school term.
