Farmers warned against planting in February

Farmers who are currently planting crops risk losing their seeds because February is projected to become dryer than January.

This is according to the commissioner meteorology in the water and environment ministry, Michael Nkalubo.

Nkalubo, who is also the permanent representative of Uganda to the world meteorology office, said Uganda had received unprecedented rains because it lies along the equator.

“Currently, we are experiencing a dry spell. We shall continue with this dryness, although at times it will be punctuated with some showers, which will not be sustainable for agricultural production,” Nkalubo explained.

Nkalubo advised farmers to continue harvesting their crops, saying this current change in the weather is not sustainable.

“Clear your gardens properly, dry your crops well as you wait for the rains, which we are expecting starting early March, April and May,” he counselled.

He said the meteorology department will soon be issuing the weather forecast to cover the period of March, April and May.
