Four police officers attached to Lira police station are under detention for discipline issues and for being linked to criminals.

Investigations into the matter are underway, although CIID director Grace Akullo did not mention further details, saying it would jeopardize investigation.

The head of the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department traveled to Lira on Thursday and addressed journalists.

She was there to follow up complaints raised by Lira business people to Police chief Kale Kayihura that the area police are mismanaging cases.

The residents also complain that some policemen are working with thugs to cause havoc to the communities.

“I am here to make a follow up on the work initiated by the Inspector General of Police in relation to the security issue raised by the business communities,” said Akullo.

“I will look at a number of cases including perusing through many files.”

The CIID director mentioned that former Lira district police commander, Robert Ssemata and OC CIID, Joseph Kirabo will also be probed.

Ssemata was replaced by Ashraf Chemonges following rampant complaints by the business community headed by Bosco Ogwang Edola to Kayihura only a fortnight ago.

In a deadly incident three weeks back, Susan Akidi, a business woman in Lira, was shot dead and sh65m allegedly robbed from her.

In another incident, unknown gunmen supermarket robbed a supermarket and gunned down a motorcyclist (boda boda rider).

Police boss Kayihura then assigned the Police deputy director of operation, Christopher Obache, to take charge of the security in Lira to weed out criminals.

Akullo said they found out some loopholes in the criminal investigations department, which led to the arrest of some policemen to explain how some cases were handled.
