DPP vows to combat corruption

THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mike Chibita has said the directorate of public prosecutions is ready and willing to make possible improvements to ensure better transparent service delivery in investigations and prosecutions leading to recovery and freezing of assets obtained through corruption.

He added that it is the intention of the directorate to increase capacity in handling corruption cases involving asset recovery and of funds as had been done in the National Agricultural Advisory Services NAADS and Office of the Prime Minister cases attributing it to earlier training conjointly with the Directorate of Public Prosecutions Denmark Cooperation anti-corruption.

Chibita made the remarks while presiding at the opening of a four day training workshop for prosecutors, investigators and judicial officers involved in handling cases of corruption and abuse of public office in Uganda at Lake View Resort Hotel Mbarara.

The training program is being facilitated by Directorate of Public Prosecutions and Inspectorate of Government Uganda and Directorate of Public Prosecutions Denmark in an effort to fight corruption.

He said the joint training has added advantage of improving coordination and communication between the investigators and the prosecutors in identifying common challenges affecting investigation and prosecution of cases and coming up with solutions where possible.

The State Prosecutor of Directorate of Public Prosecutions Denmark Henrik Heimer said Denmark government has managed corruption by giving tough punishments which include imprisonment of the convict for ten years, freezing of assets, constraining and confiscating property and prevent the convicted person never to hold any job again in the public sector that had been resourceful in combating corruption.
