NOMINATIONS for Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) polls have closed and the contest for the top job appears to be between Kisitu Mayanja backed by the current executive and Jack Wavamunno who has bounced back to halt continuity.

With the February 1 polls taking shape, the third candidate Arthur Blick has got off to a slow start having joined the race just two weeks ago but has potential to swing votes in the remaining period.

Blick’s good inter-personal relationship with a sizeable number of delegates could win him some votes.

The fourth candidate Hamid Gombe is expected to throw weight behind his long-time friend Wavamunno.

Kisitu, who previously served as vice president, showed intent to replace outgoing president George Kagimu over a year ago while Wavamunno, a founder president of FMU was urged to return and ‘clean up’ the sport at the height of controversies that rocked motor rally mid-season.

The assembly is comprised of 84 delegates drawn from 15 clubs which shall each be represented by five officials.

The nine FMU executive members are also delegates, bringing the total number of delegates to 84.

Clubs are likely to vote this way: Mbarara Motor Club, F1 Club, Uganda Motorsport Safety Marshals Association (UMSMA), Vintage Club, Motorsport Promo and Motorsport Africa Club (MOSAC) are most likely to go for Wavamunno.

According to a source in Kisitu’s campaign team, they are with certainty counting on Central Motor Club, Enduro Club, Southern Motor Club, Uganda Motocross Club and five of the nine FMU executives.

Blick, a former FMU vice president (motor cycling) is assured of his own club SMOC and is targeting individuals most especially active and retired competitors who are delegates.

There are also swing clubs.

United Motorsport Club (UMOSPOC), Uganda Motorsport Marshals Association (UMMA), Eastern Motor Club and Uganda Motor Club have not been clearly identified with a specific candidate. These will determine the winner.

Meanwhile, Motorsport Promo president Dusman Okee is contesting for the newly created position of vice president.

He will have to contend with Brian Tumusiime, outgoing FMU treasurer Herbert Rutagwera and Central Motor Club’s Rajab Kavuma.

Outgoing vice president (motorsport) Mukiibi Katende will contest for the position of deputy vice president (motorsport) with MOSAC’s Jeff Kabagambe and Moses Seguya.

Joseph Mwangala and Hannington Kisooka are vying for the position of deputy vice president (motorcycling) while Mutale Tendo and Masadde Kabuye are contesting for deputy vice president (touring, vintage and road safety). FMU general secretary Reynolds Kibira will defend the position against his assistant Nevice Kizito.
