The Uganda Government has reinforced its troop presence in South Sudan following an official invitation by the Government and because of its interest, Foreign Affairs Ministry has said.

“Initially we were in South to protect key installations, carry out evacuation mission and allow for the easy flow of humanitarian assistance but now we are ensuring that proper conditions for peaceful negotiations take place,” said Fred Opolot, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson.

The crisis in South Sudan broke out on December 15, 2013 after the sacking of former vice president, Dr. Riek Machar. President Salva Kiir, accused Riek Machar of trying to launch a coup.

Machar has since denied the accusation and is demanding the release of 11 high-level detainees. Peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict mediated by the IGAD are currently going on in the Ethiopian Capital of Addis Ababa.
