40.7% pass CPA exams

The Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB) has released results of the November 2013 examinations which show an improvement in the pass rate of the Certified Public Accountants of Uganda course.

The Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB) has released results of the November 2013 examinations which show an improvement in the pass rate of the Certified Public Accountants of Uganda course.


“There were 4,606 candidates in November 2013 examinations, compared to 4,257 candidates in June 2013. The overall pass rate was 46.5% compared to 40.7% in June 2013,” said Uthman Manyanja, the chairperson of PAEB at a news conference recently.

Arinaitwe Joan and Elongar John Francis were the best students in the professional accounting course.

For the accounting technicians’ certificate of Uganda-ATC (U), 450 candidates sat for the November exams as compared to 479 in June.

The overall pass rate was 57%.9 compared to 51% in June 2013. Cumulatively, 1,490 have completed the course since it was established in 2001.

Some of the students who excelled in these exams were Ssendawula John in Principles of Accounting 1, Wandera Muniru in Principles of Law 1, Kyomuhendo Christine in commercial environment, Nabayinda Sylvia in Principles of accounting 2, Nyamwiza Juliet in Priciples of Law 2 among others.

For the first time in the institute’s history, exams were conducted in six centres; Arua, Fort Portal, Gulu, Kampala, Mbale and Mbarara in an effort to make sure that aspiring professional accountants upcountry have access to examinations.

ICPAU has two examinations sittings in a year; in June and November, for the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) and Accounting Technicians Certificate (ATC) courses.

Uganda has seen a rise in the number of professional accountants over the years. Small and Medium Enterprises, the engine of economic growth will then be largely supported by this rise.

Poor book keeping is one of the challenges that hold back the growth of SMEs in the country.
