MUKONO - A mother is yet to recover from shock after she found a drunken stranger lying besides her four-year-old baby girl after he allegedly defiled her.

The hair-raising incident happened on New Year's eve when the mother, Joy Kyomugisha, had left the baby under the care of her elder siblings and gone Passover prayers at Namboole.

A devastated Kyomugisha, a resident of Ssaagalankoko village in Goma division said she left the baby with her (the baby's) two elder sisters.

"I was shocked to find a stranger's shoes in the house on Thursday morning yet I had not left any elder person at home.  I asked the children but they were still asleep and they knew nothing about them."

“When I checked in their bed, there was nothing but I found a strange man sleeping on my bed with the girl lying on his chest. I tried to wake him asking what he had come for but he was deep asleep and drunk.

"He later woke up and tried to attack me but I got an iron bar and hit him before he took off," said the mother.

Kyomugisha said that after Ssemivumbi fled, she checked the baby and found that the man had defiled her.

“I rushed to Kiwanga Police from where I was reffered to Seeta Police. We were taken to Mulago where the doctor examined the baby and gave her some medication. She now urinates in pain,” she said.

The baby's siblings said that they woke up at around 6:00am local time (EAT) to ease themselves and they believe Ssemivumbi could have used that chance to sneak in because they had not locked the door.

The crime boss at Seeta Police station, Amuza Mujeme said the suspect,  Ben Ssemivumbi, a resident of Kasokoso village in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality indeed defiled the baby.

He said that the doctor’s report from Mulago hospital proved that the baby was defiled.

“Ssemivumbi was also examined and doctors found out that he is mentally upright. He is going to be prosecuted over charges of aggravated defilement,” he said.

On his part, Ssemivumbi says that he had spent the entire New Year's eve drinking.

He said that he mistakenly entered Kyomugisha’s house and does not remember having sexual intercourse with the baby.
