There is a local saying that goes thus: “akakadde kamu te’kaffa ku kyalo”. This literally means that an elder doesn’t die alone in a village/community. Indeed it was the case with rugby at the weekend.

As fans were still discussing a 27-10 defeat of G4S Pirates by Ezee Money Rhinos in the Nile Special Premier Rugby League, shocking news of Heathens’ 10-5 defeat by Entebbe based side Sadolin Mongers.

Whereas the 27-10 results had a big impact on Pirates this season, the 10-5 defeat of Heathens had a bigger impact as it came in the way of the title they had won since 2002.

Timothy Buloti, Robinson Mulumba, Abel Ssozi managed a try while James Musitwa added a try, penalty and conversion for Rhinos while Greg Lukendo made a try and Kevin Makmot scored a penalty and conversion for Pirates.

At Kyadondo, Lira Bulls were smashed 105-0 in ruthless fashion by Toyota Buffaloes in a game that was stopped for over half-an-hour until the hosts provided an ambulance.

In the first round, Buffaloes got a 28-0 walkover in Lira after hosts Lira Bulls failed to provide the ambulance.

In Entebbe, Heathens’ coach Brian Tabaruka faulted referee Joseph Kabaye for his side’s 10-5 defeat by Sadolin Mongers in the Nile Special Premier Rugby League fixture on Saturday at the House of Pain Rugby ground.

Tabaruka in an interview after the game said they respected the decisions of the referee but the multiple irregular decisions cost his side the four points that has made his clubs’ title defence more or less impossible even with six games left to the league’s end.

“I don’t believe in commenting on referees but today we have seen poor officiating with multiple mistakes by the referee,” Tabaruka stated.

Michael Wokorach gave Heathens a 5-0 lead courtesy of a try in the first half but the Mongers responded the same way through Joseph Tamale before Adrian Waswa added a conversion and penalty to seal the 10-5 half time lead in an enthralling afternoon encounter.

In the second half, Heathens mounted pressure but that had no effect on the scoreboard as the Mongers defended their game to the very final whistle.

“It is the self-belief and confidence that the boys have gained that gave us this victory we have been looking for all the years,” Mongers coach-player Kigongo Ssebalamu said after their victory.

Heathens’ defeat gave rivals DMark Kobs an 11-point lead as they got a bonus point after a 50-7 whipping of Mutoni Warriors at Legends Rugby Club.

Brian Odongo scored two tries while Ivan Mugira, Ronald Musajja, Timothy Kabonero, Adrian Kasiita, Ambrose Kamanyiire, Ramathan Govule and Cyrus Wattum added a try each and James Ijongat added three conversions.

Mutoni Warriors’ consolation try was scored by Ruben Kihumuro and later a conversion by Owen Kinyera.
