The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is closing down non-tax paying businesses in efforts to close down a sh30b tax collection deficit at the end of the first quarter.

Skynet, a Kampala based courier company was closed down for an outstanding tax debt of sh500m after issuing close to 10 bounced cheques in part payments since December 2012.

Lumarks investments – a Kampala based construction company has been closed for a sh379m tax debt largely accrued from lucrative construction deals during the 2007 Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting in Uganda.

Waiswa Abudu Sallam, URA’s debt collection manager said the law allows the tax body to auction properties of the two companies within seven working days if no payment agreement is reached.

“We have a large deficit that we are trying to fix. We have called them for negotiations. We will reopen their businesses if they make a down payment of at least 30%,” he said
