Former Chief Justice Samuel Wako Wambuzi has asked new judges to develop personal mission statements based on correct principles, as a way of fulfilling the expectations of the public.

Such principles are very necessary in dispensation of justice.

“A personal mission statement should be a personal constitution based on correct principles and basis against which every decision concerning the most effective use of your time, your talents, and your energies can be effectively measured,” Wambuzi said.

Wambuzi made this remarks recently while officiating at a thanksgiving ceremony for the appointment of Justice David Batema as a High Court Judge. The ceremony was held at Kazigo village Nabitende sub-county in Iganga district on Saturday.

Recently President Yoweri Museveni appointed 28 new judges to fill vacant positions in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Course. In his appointment Batema the former registrar Jinja High Court was appointed a High Court Judge.

Wambuzi noted that a personal mission statement is the key criterion by which every thing else is evaluated and directed, it’s the basis for making daily decisions in the midst of circumstances and emotions that affect our lives.
“If you defend and protect your constitution, I have no doubt you will be able to defend and protect the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda which requires protection in accordance with your judicial oath,” Wambuzi observed.

The Chief justice assured  the judicial officers that the  public will use their  personal statement to evaluate whatever they do  or say whether  in private  or in public.  “Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done,” he told the officers.

He noted that since each individual is unique, a personal mission statement will reflect that uniqueness, both in content and form. It focuses on what one wants to be and the values or principles upon which and doing are based.

Never compromise with honesty. Ensure that you hear both sides before judging a case. Concentrate on abilities and efforts on the task at hand rather than worry about the next job or promotion, Wambuzi advised the newly appointed judges.
