MINISTERIAL PRESS STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION TO COMMEMORATE THE SAFE MOTHERHOOD DAY

As we commemorate this day today, we should strengthen our efforts to increasing awareness on the dangers of teenage pregnancies which currently contribute to over 30% of maternal deaths. Adolescent pregnancy implies that the individual is carrying a baby while she is still a baby herself, and is therefore prone to experiencing many risks that endanger her health and that of her baby. This state further contributes to an increase in complications related to pregnancy and an increase in maternal mortality, perinatal and infant mortality, and to the vicious cycle of ill-health and poverty
