Hundreds of Ugandans have thronged Rukungiri stadium in western Uganda to take part in celebrations to mark the 51st independence celebrations.

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Dr. Kizza Besigye, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also attended unlike in the past where opposition politicians have shunned such events.

Besigye who came walking was ushered into the VIP tent by the Rukungiri Municipality MP Roland Kaginda amidst ululation from the crowd.

By 12pm, President Yoweri Museveni and his Mozambican counterpart, President Armando Guebuza had arrived at the venue.

Over 220 people are expected to be decorated with national medals during the celebrations. The President atop a military jeep inspected the guard on honor mounted by UPDF soldiers.

Hundreds throng Rukungiri Stadium

 Minutes after the Government Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo recognized the presence of Besigye, Lukwago and other opposition leaders, Besigye walked away.

Besigye was irked by Opondo’s remarks that Rukungiri was recommitting itself to NRM party. According to Besigye, the celebrations were  national not NRM party affair.
