Police in Mbarara are still hunting for parents of the conjoined twins who died at Mbarara referral hospital on Tuesday at 3:50am due to organ failure.

The couple, Sabira Mwanje and his wife, Ninsiima Tumusiime, residents of Kijungu, Kakoba Division in Mbarara apparently failed to raise sh300,000 to fuel an ambulance to transport the twins to Mulago hospital where, they were referred on Sunday. The mother reportedly refused to breastfeed the babies.

Dr. George Upenytho, the hospital executive director said the three-day-old conjoined twin girls were born at Mbarara referral hospital on Saturday by cesarean section and had been referred to Mulago hospital to be separated.

Dr. Upenytho, said before the twins died, the young couple who were devastated by giving birth to twins, escaped from the hospital on Monday evening, leaving the twins under the care of the grandmother, Saidat Namandde, a resident of Kyazanga, Lwengo district.

Polly Namaye, the Rwizi region Police spokesperson, said they were looking for the parents after learning that they escaped and abandoned the baby in the hospital.

Mwanje's mother, Namandde, who was left in the hospital, could not blame her son and his wife for escaping in the hospital, saying they were shocked and had no money to take care of them.

"My children are jobless, poor and had no hope that the baby could survive. We even had no money to support us at Mbarara hospital, how could we have raised money to take care of the baby and the mother in Mulago hospital," she added.
