MUK student murder: Suspects re-apply for bail

Three students of Makerere University charged with the murder of a former student David Otim Ojok have applied for bail again.

KAMPALA - Three students of Makerere University charged with the murder of a former student David Otim Ojok have applied for bail again.

The accused are the chairperson designate of Nkrumah hall Marvin Mutungi, Martin Atukwase and Derrick Wagooli.

They filed their bail application at Kampala High Court registrar, Isaac Muwata through their lawyers from Mwene, Kahirwa, Mwebesa and Company Advocates. The registrar is set to allocate their application to a yet-to-be-known judge for hearing.

Their first bail application was dismissed on May 29 by Justice Frank Rugadya Atwooki of the Kampala high court dismissed their first bail application in May 29 this year.

Rugadya dismissed the application on grounds that the accused persons were already sitting their exams in Luzira and that their sureties were coming from upcountry in Mbarara, Luweero and Manafwa.

The trio residents of Makerere University’s Nkrumah hall were arrested and charged on April 24 this year in connection with the murder of Ojok.

It is alleged that the trio and others still at large on April 12 murdered the former student, suspecting him of being a thief.

Ojok, a graduate of Computer Science at the institution, was admitted at Mulago Hospital where he was pronounced dead the following day. He was buried at his ancestral home at Kolkil village in Pader district.

According to police records, Ojok had gone to Nkrumah hostel to demand his money amounting to sh500, 000 from one of the resident students who had dodged him for some time.

Meanwhile, Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Mary Kaitesi adjourned the matter to August 13 for mention.

This was after the principal State attorney Edward Muhumuza informed court that investigations in the matter were ongoing.

“I pray for a shorter adjournment to enable the police finalize with their investigations,” said Muhumuza.

The three suspects were second-year students at the time of their arrest. Mutungi was doing Civil Engineering, Atukwase Software Engineering and Wagooli Quantitative Economics.
