Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in a fire Sunday evening that gutted a girls' dormitory at Jinja Progressive Academy.

The fire broke out in the Senior Five girls’ dormitory destroying properties worth millions shortly after reporting for their third term.

Some of the students said they saw flames and smoke spweing from the windows and doors of the dormitory and rushed to put it out.

They fetched water from the school’s water storage facility using buckets and tried to put out the fire while others used fire extinguishers to contain it but in vain.

“We rushed and saved property which was in the next room fearing that it would also catch fire but no one was injured,” a student said.

Fire fighters from Jinja Central Police Station who rsuhed to contain the fire run out of water and had to rush back for more.

A somber mood hang over students as they sorted sifted through the remains of the burnt properties.

By the time of the fire outbreak, administration officials were not present and the office of the director remained closed.

The fire brigade officer at Jinja Police Station, Rogers Turinawe said they could not establish the real cause of the fire adding that they have started investigations into the matter.

Turinawe said he once warned the administration about congestion in the dormitories after realising that students were sleeping on triple decker beds.
