A total of 660 heads of educational institutions from 26 districts in western Uganda have completed a 10-day patriotism course.

The participants included head teachers and their deputies, principals of tertiary institutions and teachers.

They were passed out at Bweranyangi Girls’ School last week.

In addition to daily physical exercises and parade drills, the training included introduction to patriotism studies, political economy, the Constitution, Uganda’s natural resources, military science and colonial history.

Other topics were ways of thinking, financial literacy, skilling Uganda, trends in combating corruption, Vision 2040, the history of the military in Uganda and the role of UPDF in regional peace and development.

The teachers hailed President Yoweri Museveni for initiating the training and described it as critical to the country.

In a resolution, the teachers recommended that patriotism training be rolled out to all institutions of learning and extended to religious groups as well.

The teachers also called for the introduction of a syllabus for patriotism studies in institutions of learning.

Addressing the participants, the commissioner for patriotism in the Office of the President, Lt. Col. Henry Matsiko, said the main objective of patriotism training is to empower teachers to inculcate values in students and raise the level of national consciousness.

Mohammed Mayanja, a presidential adviser, appealed to the participants to help in transforming the lives of their families and communities, noting that the lack of the will to transform is what has failed Africa.
