UNRA demolishes buildings in road reserves

UGANDA National Roads Authority (UNRA) has started demolishing illegal buildings, kiosks and other structures constructed in road reserves in an effort to pave way for the expansion of Entebbe Highway.

The exercise that started last week has featured demolition of structures in the road reserve at Namulanda, Mpala, Bwebajja, Kitende, Kajjansi, Lweza, Sseguku, Zzana, Namasuba, and Najjanankumbi.

According to UNRA Public Relations Officer, Dan Alinange, the exercise will cover other parts along Kampala-Hoima, Mityana, Gulu and Gayaza roads.

“People who have such structures along these roads were warned to remove their properties and themselves much earlier, but some of them turned a deaf ear. However, the authority will issue no further warning but to proceed as planned” Alinange said.

Residents of Bwebajja, Sseguku, Kajjansi, Zzana, and Namasuba dispute UNRA’s version of events and claim they were not given enough time to enable them remove their properties. 

Some residents of Sseguku, Lweza, Kajjansi are however unhappy about the lack of compensation from government for their property.
