THIRTEEN people have been confirmed dead in Masindi district following fatal accident which involved a truck that was transporting workers from Kinyara Sugar Factory

THIRTEEN people have been confirmed dead in Masindi district following fatal accident which involved a truck that was transporting workers from Kinyara Sugar Factory.

 

The accident which occurred at Zebra Junction along the Masindi-Buliisa road left over 50 others critically injured.

 

It occurred on Thursday afternoon when a Fuso lorry registration number UAN 699Z that was heading to Masindi town overturned after joining the main road.

 

Lydia Tumushabe, the Albertine Region police spokesperson attributed the accident to overspeeding.

 

However eye witnesses say the lorry failed to brake and rolled several times.

 

Police, army and the Masindi hospital ambulances rushed to the scene to help save the situation.

 

The dead had not been identified by press time but include nine women and four men.

 

Masindi Hospital is currently overwhelmed by the big number of the causalities who have been admitted.

 

There are fears that the death toll could rise. Many have been referred to Gulu and Hoima regional referral hospitals.
