Filthy sinks and cockroaches moving freely among the baking pans. This was only a small part of what the kitchen of Shoprite supermarket Lugogo branch looked like on Wednesday when Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Public Health team raided the facility.

The filth in the bakery section prompted the KCCA team to shut down the section on Thursday.

KCCA had, on Wednesday, issued a warning to management over the messy environment in which they were operating, but when the public health team stormed the place on Thursday, nothing had changed.

"KCCA public health team asked Shoprite management to fumigate the bakery section which had cockroaches, but when they did so, they put the cakes and bread back on the shelves which is harmful to the public," said Peter Kaujju, the KCCA public relations officer.

Kaujju said KCCA had given management 48 hours to comply or they would remain closed.

Efforts to get a comment from Godfrey Bwire, the Shoprite kitchen section manager were futile as he referred the reporters to the Shoprite Clock Tower offices.

Last week KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi during the health and safety trade fare asked manufacturers to comply with public health laws protecting lives of people.
