Massa relishes PSL test

GEOFFREY Massa believes that the South Africa Premier League will bring the best out of him.

On Tuesday, the Cranes striker completed a lucrative transfer to PSL side University of Pretoria from Northern Cyprus outfit Yenicami on a one-year renewable contract.

But although his return to Africa, appeared a step back in terms of career development, he feels the competitive nature of the PSL will not only bring the best out of him but also prepare him for a potential deal in Europe next season.

“I worked out the move before signing and I believe I made the right decision. I have my reasons why I chose just a year.

“The PSL is competitive and helps you physically and mentally as a player. _ at’s what I needed at the moment,” Massa told New Vision Sport.

“Coach Steve (Barker) was really interested in me. He had pursued me for some time and believes in me. I will give him a season and see how all goes,” Massa told New Vision Sport earlier.

The Cranes striker, who had a short spell with another PSL side Jomo Cosmos in the 2008/2009 season, had his first training session with the team on Friday.

He could make his debut appearance in the ABSA Premier League game against SuperSport on August 28.

“I did some gym work before joining the rest of the team. I am enjoying myself at the moment and can’t wait for my first game,” he added.

Denis Onyango is the other Ugandan who plies his trade in the ABSA Premier League with Bidvest University.

If Massa is passed fit for the game against SuperSport next week, the University of Pretoria (Amatuks) will instantly benefit a lot from a striker who was a revelation for his club last season.

In 24 league appearances for Cyprus side Yenicami, Massa hit the back of the net 29 times, a superb return from a player, who had struggled to register half that number in the Egyptian league with El Masry and later Etisalat in the lower tier a couple of seasons ago. 

He worked hard to become a goal scoring forward, a team player, and most importantly, a professional leader. thats what the Amatuks will get!
