Kaizer Chiefs believe the arrival of Ugandan midfielder Sula Matovu will strengthen their ABSA Premiership title credentials next season.

The former Proline star signed a three-year contract with the South Africa giants Wednesday after a successful two-week trial stint.

And Chiefs coach Steve Komphela sounded excited with his latest acquisition.

“He’s an explosive player. He’s very quick off the mark,” Komphela told the Kaizer Chiefs website.

“Besides his speed, Sula has good technical ability. Let’s see how he blends with the other top dogs here at Kaizer Chiefs.”

Club manager Bobby Motaung feels Matovu was the perfect signing for the club ahead of what should be an interesting season for the Amakhosi.

“We were looking at somebody that can play on the wing,” he says. “Sula impressed during his trial period. We welcome him to the Kaizer Chiefs family.”

Matovu becomes the third Ugandan player to turn out for Chiefs after David Obua and Ivan Bukenya, who is still with the club.

The left-footed midfielder played for Ethiopian side St George, before moving to Iraq club Erbil. He recently played for Swedish side BK Hacken.

Matovu is already relishing the prospect of playing for one of Africa’s top sides.

“Chiefs are a big team in Africa with big players. The club has good administration, it’s professionally run and it’s all about team work, which I like.”
