JINJA - Over 200 people turned up in Jinja to celebrate the first International Day of Yoga observed world over on June 21.

The day was by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014.

Yoga is an old physical, mental and spiritual practice having its origin in India, which aims to transform both body and mind.

One of the organizers of the event, Umesh Prota Singh of Nile Ply, told New Vision that the yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline.

‘Sound mind’

The program was a live demonstration of yoga with the guests invited.

Participants at the event were made to do exercises which were conducted by Upandra Prabhat of Excel Construction Company who urged the members to carry out daily exercises because yoga makes one feel like a child again.

On the exercise menu included minor yoga (for opening body joints) and fast yoga.

Prabhat urged the members to take yoga to the doorstep of every homestead to free them from the world of misery.

He also said that in a country where yoga was practiced, there is no lack, impurity, ignorance and injustice.

“Yoga is beneficial to the health and also ensures that one has sound mind. It is also beneficial to spirit and physical fitness. It stretches the legs, back and arms, and invigorates you, brings balance and equilibrium to your mind.

“Besides, it also helps to improve concentration, makes the legs strong, improves balance, and opens the hips. It also helps those suffering from backache,” Prabhat said.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (Hindu Self Working Organisation) will be conducting yoga classes every Sunday at the SDM Temple near the Source of the Nile from 8-10 a.m.

The public has been urged to attend the classes and share the experience.
