A Spanish player scout Antonio Flores has been named the head coach of Uganda Cup holders SC Villa.

Flores, a qualified coach, was in the country at the start of this year on a two-week scouting programme after Villa went into partnership with him. He has signed a three-year contract.

Villa president Ben Misagga is optimistic that the coming of Flores, who has replaced Ibrahim Kirya, will lift the performance of his club.
“Antonio was in the country at the start of this year and he monitored all our players. He is a good coach with exposure and we are confident he will deliver,” Misagga stated.

Another Spaniard, Ivan Fernandez, will be Flores’s assistant in a backroom team which will include two local coaches who will be hired after a rigorous interview process. Flores was also the head coach of the Under-16 Polideportivo Aguadulce, a team which plays in Andaluza league — the fifth level of competition in Spanish League Football. Both coaches hold UEFA A coaching badges. The Spaniards’ first assignment will be against Yanga and Simba in friendlies against the two leading Tanzanian teams.

Ssekisambu fired

The Jogoos who are expected to travel to Dar-es-Salaam this evening will be without star player Erisa Ssekisambu.

Despite being named the Uganda Cup MVP, Villa sacked Ssekisambu yesterday alongside Fahad Kawooya and Nicholas Sebwato for what Misagga termed as gross indiscipline. Last week the striker notched a double for Uganda Cranes against Tanzania in the first leg of the CHAN qualifiers.

“Just because he scored two goals against Tanzania mhe feels that he is untouchable now,” Misagga said. However it has since emerged that Ssekisambu was agitating for an improved contract from the club which would cost Villa $20,000 (sh60m) for the remaining 12 months of his three-year contract.

“When his close friends Kawooya and Sebwato discovered that Ssekisambu had been released, they also resorted to indiscipline. So we decided to let the three players go since we can’t tolerate such behaviour,” Misagga added.
