The Democratic Party (DP) has postponed its delegates’ conference which had been scheduled to take place on Friday.

Owing to the conflicts that have characterized the party’s grassroots elections with hundreds of petitions disputing the outcome of the elections, the party National Executive Committee has resolved to push the delegates’ conference to July 23, 2015.

Party spokesman Paul Kenneth Kakande attributed the postponement of the conference to the conflicts experienced during the party’s grassroots elections.

The revised party roadmap indicates grassroots elections are supposed to be completed on Saturday.

Nominations for contenders for the party presidency and other party positions will be conducted next week on Thursday and Friday.

The conference will take place at Prof. Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya’s Katomi Kingdom Resort Hotel at Garuga in Wakiso.

Over 200 petitions from various parts of the country have been filed at the party headquarters; although Kakande said over 80% of the petitions have been sorted out.

The party leaders (NEC) have issued tough guidelines for those who intend to vie for various national positions which are likely to close out leaders like the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

Quoting article 64 (a) (i) of the DP constitution, Kakande said, “A person shall not qualify to be elected National chairman, president or vice president of the party if he or she has been an active member of the party for at least ten years or a member of the National Council for at least five years.”
