The list for this year’s MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) nominations, set for July 18, is out with South Africa and Nigeria leading with several nods in 13 categories.

The announcements were made at a star-studded ceremony in Johannesburg, South Africa, attracting several artistes across the continent.

A total of 70 nominees were revealed with South Africa and Nigeria managing 20 and 19 nominations respectively.

Uganda’s only claim to the awards is local artiste Bebe Cool’s video, “Love You Every day.”

But the video was directed by Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, which means he will pick the award should it win the gong in the “Video Of The Year” category.

Celebrating the extraordinary evolution of African achievement, this year’s MAMA’s recognises contemporary artists and trailblazers in a range of music and lifestyle categories including Song of the Year, Video of the Year, Best Collaboration and Personality of the Year.

Nominees for additional categories, including the MTV Base Leadership Award and Best International Act, will be revealed at a later date.

After losing out to Kenyan-born Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o in the same category last year, MTVBase Africa made a Twitter announcement prior to the event that stand-up comedian and new Daily Show host, Trevor Noah (South Africa), was nominated for the second year running as “Personality of the Year” - where he goes up against fellow comic Basketmouth (Nigeria), TV personality and reality star Bonang Matheba (South Africa), actor O.C. Ukeje (Nigeria) and Manchester City/Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast).

Competing in the prestigious “Best Male act category” are AKA (South Africa), Davido (Nigeria), Diamond (Tanzania) and Sarkodie (Ghana), while female artists making their mark in the “Best Female Act category” include Bucie (SA), Busiswa (SA), Seyi Shay (Nigeria), Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania) and Yemi Alade (Nigeria).

Tim Jacobs, the CEO of MultiChoice Africa, congratulated the nominees and expressed the company’s commitment to showcasing African talent on its various platforms.

“Not only will our subscribers be treated to the best in African music, live on GOtv Plus channel 72, but they will also have an opportunity to catch the awards on multiple channels, which will allow more viewers access to enjoy this music showcase.”

The awards will be televised live across Africa on MTV Base on GOtv PLUS channel 72 at 10:00pm.
