Last Saturday, the Mirinda Miss Teens docked at the National Theatre to search for the finest girl in the Kampala cluster of schools. Over 17 schools partook last weekend in a competition that has been on the trail for the past two months around the country.

Though I still find it unfair that the organisers didn’t go to the Northern region to find out what those young girls are up to.

Nonetheless, it’s been a fun-filled search. And not that these kids were as exceptional and glowing like the Miss Uganda contestants, but it was fun watching them experiment with their talents and potentials.

The day was taken by Kakungulu Memorial School’s student Zahara Mohammed who beat 33 girls for the Miss Teens Kampala crown.

She was trailed by Mengo SS’ Elizabeth Musubika (First runner-up) and St. Mary Namagunga’s Catherine Guhirwa (2nd runner-up).  Zahara will represent Kampala in the Miss Teens grand finale in August 31 at Kati Kati grounds, Lugogo.

Zahara’s striking beauty, confidence and playful fun side that the scouts are so keen on could have been the attributes that struck the competition’s judges, Vision Group’s Nigel Nassar, Urban TV’s Sophie Tatu and Radio One’s Yvonne Koreta.

The other slots also had brilliant winners too with Babirye Samalie from Brilliant High School winning the Miss Brainy, followed by St. Mary’s Namagunga’s Nanono Shoiley and Abwi Vella Sandra in the second and third positions respectively.

Miss Entrepreneur was won by Ajok Brenda Abong from St. Mary’s Namagunga, whose proposal of setting up a monthly magazine that will educate and entertain Uganda’s youth on many topics impressed the judges.

Her competitors were poor at explaining their proposals and you’re left wondering whether they even wrote them themselves.

I was impressed by the Miss Fashionista winner, 18-year old Natasha Nakisitu. Her choice of model to accentuate the blue body con dress showed the designer’s mind this little girl has. If only she can grow with that mind.
