UGANDA Martyrs Namugongo Catholic Parish is looking for the mother of a baby girl abandoned on Sunday night at the Uganda Martyrs Parish offices.

Church authorities say they are worried about the baby's safety but they still have no leads on the mother.

The parish secretary Susan Walusimbi told New Vision the month-old baby girl was found near the parish offices at night wrapped in only a cloth while a polythene bag containing diapers lay next to her.

"If someone out there who knows a mother that was pregnant and has had a child and she doesn’t have that child, they should consultant our office," she said.

“We reported the case at the church police post; the baby is okay but we first took her to the hospital" Walusimbi added.

"I can only imagine the person who did it had to be under some pretty intense stress to have done that," she said.

Venonica Byaruhanga one of the pilgrims from Mbarara said "you have got to think everybody's got a story. There's a reason for everything. I mean nobody knows what was going through her head so you can't judge anybody. Thank God the baby she alive and the secretary taking care of her.”

"Something could've been going on at home and she just couldn't take care of it, but frankly this is better to abandon her at the church than dump her in a toilet" she added.

The baby girl is currently in the custody of parish secretary.
