The government of Uganda working through the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries has extended a financial grant of sh500 million to Kanungu district to help farmers procure dairy cattle to boost milk production in the district.

This was disclosed by the LC5 chairperson Josephine Kasya while speaking to a district Naads annual review meeting July 24th where she lamented that 10 years after Kanungu became an independent district they still depend on milk supplies from neighbouring Rukungiri.

Kasya said that she had met the Minister of Agriculture Tress Bucyanayandi whom she briefed about the acute shortage of milk in Kanungu.

This has resulted to high prices for the little which is got from Rukungiri and as a result children in most families do not access it which has led to malnutrition.

"Kanungu is known as food basket because it produces rice, Irish potatoes and beans but does not produce milk and as a result our children are stunted, a fact we should find a solution and that is to increase milk production," She said.

Kasya said that the district has already identified potential farmers who will be given the dairy cows for milk production.

They will also construct a modern cooling plant in two major town councils so that all people in the district can access good quality milk.
