UGANDA National Roads Authority (UNRA) plans to set up a national compensation desk to verify land titles and queries regarding recompense from the public.

The UNRA executive director, Allen Kagina, said the desk will be set up in Kyambogo, a Kampala suburb, in a few weeks' time.

"Compensation is a big issue and there is need to handle it carefully. The team at the desk will look into people's claims and advise the public appropriately," she added.

The roads authority boss, who was on a trip to the Kampala-Entebbe expressway project site on Thursday, said the desk will have a toll free landline through which people would be able to access information about their compensation claims.

"We would like the people to give us correct information to ease our work. People are not happy about the compensation because it is a complex issue. Others make false claims," she added.

Kagina, who was appointed to the position recently, was touring the project for the first time.

One of the most expensive road projects undertaken by government so far, Kampala-Entebbe expressway is funded through a $350m (sh1.047 trillion) loan provided by Exim Bank of China.

Uganda has contributed $126m (sh377b), excluding compensation estimated to cost sh100b.
