KAMPALA - Christopher Thomas, the estranged husband to Princess Ruth Komuntale of Toro Kingdom who was recently involved in a serious accident, is steadily improving in hospital.

At Mulago Hospital, a woman (in her mid-30s) who described herself as his caretaker said Thomas is showing signs of recovery but will remain under medical surveillance for an undisclosed period of time.

He is admitted in Ward 6 of the Private Wing of the health facility in Uganda's capital Kampala.

Sources at the hospital revealed that on Wednesday Thomas was taken for check-up (x-ray and CT scan) to establish whether he would need to undergo an operation on his arm and shoulder.

It has also been established that Princess Komuntale had not gone to see her estranged husband as she is currently in the United States.

'Not unconscious'

The Toro Kingdom spokesman, Kennedy Gasalire said that Komuntale was in the US but explained that the monarchy did not treat Thomas’ ordeal as the institution’s matter.

He said the kingdom had not considered extending any form of assistance to Thomas, saying there were hundreds of princesses and princes with spouses who they could not support financially.

“Thomas’s condition is not an institution’s matter; although the kingdom would consider his case if he had officially communicated to us.

"Thomas is not unconscious. He is able to talk and can communicate to us on phone if he needed any form of support from us. Let him inform his family and other people concerned,” he said.

Gasalire added: “There are hundreds of princes and princesses in Toro and if you go financing everyone’s husbands or wives, you cannot manage. But I’m sure he has medical insurance."

Thomas was last week rushed to Mulago Hospital after he was knocked down in a hit-and-run incident as he crossed the road at Kibuye along Entebbe road at about 2.00am local time.

He later told police he was heading to his Lubowa home after a drink at a friend’s bar.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Patrick Onyango said no arrests had been made in connection to the accident.

He explained that Thomas would be required to make a statement with the police when his condition stabilizes.

According to Onyango, the cell phone and wallet that Thomas possessed at the time of the accident were still being kept with traffic officers at Katwe police station.
