MUKONO - A two-acre banana and coffee seedlings multiplication garden was on Monday  set up at Namwezi zone in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, to supplement the Presidential Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) programme operational in the Luwero-Rwenzori region.

The mother garden, the second in former National Resistance Army (NRA) Mwanga II zone (Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe and Buvuma districts), was set up on land donated by a UPDF officer Lt. Col. Sarah Mpaabwa, residing in the area. The first one is located in Nama sub-county.

The day’s activities included training farmers on sustainability of agricultural projects under OWC, and it was facilitated by officials from the office of the Prime Minister (OPM), overseeing poverty reduction in the country.

David Nsereko, a Principal Development Officer in the OPM, hailed Mukono farmers for excelling in observing technical requirements which he said, has made them the first zone get a second multiplication garden.

He however lamented that there is a general weakeness and laxity in extension service provision in the country, and advised farmers in the project to  strictly observe available technical advice in the face of this challenge.

Another facilitator, Kyaknwanzi District Agricultural Officer Godfrey Ssebulime Musisi, disclosed what he called the four-acre plan under which participating families are encouraged to maintain food and cash crop gardens and  animal fodder alongside some form of livestock activities, saying it has successfully passed the test in Kyankwanzi.

Earlier, Mukono Municipality OWC coordinator Maj. Moses Segujja advised farmers to endeavour to be organized so as to be able to attract the programme initiator, President Museveni, to visit tgheir projects.

“I can confidently tell you that wherever he has visited and expressed satisfaction, he has extended material assistance as a token of appreciation,” Maj. Segujja noted.
