Gen. Aronda Nyakairima’s impending appointment to cabinet without retiring from the army should be opposed because it could set a bad precedent, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has said.

UPC vice president Joseph Bbossa said if former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Aronda becomes minister of internal affairs while he remains active in the army, it could mark the beginning of the militarization of government.

Bbossa, who was on Wednesday addressing a press conference at Uganda House, said that Ugandans should not leave matters of national governance to only a few politicians.

The Parliament appointments committee chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga recently postponed the vetting of Gen. Aronda as minister of internal affairs. There have been calls by Members of Parliament that Gen. Aronda should formally retire from the army before joining the Executive arm of government.
