Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has extended the deadline for motor vehicle revalidation from the initial set date of June 30 by six months to enable all motorists to get online registration logbooks after acquiring a tax identification number.

Sarah Banage, the URA assistant commissioner public and corporate affairs, recently said vehicle revalidation enables car owners to have them registered into their names and rectification of any inconsistencies.

Meanwhile the tax body has also auctioned over 50 custom bonded vehicles whose importers had failed to clear taxes due.

Sources at URA said vehicles that were impounded for being used to carry smuggled goods, mainly contraband are normally advertised in the media.

They are then disposed of through public auction. This applies to vehicles that were fraudulently registered and their owners deliberately refuse to validate them.

This is done under the East African Customs Management Act.

However, Banage said there are many vehicles that were impounded due to fraudulent registration but their owners redeemed them after paying the taxes which were due.
