Malaria: Uganda makes strides amid challenges

It might start with a simple bite from a frail female anopheles mosquito, but malaria has left a roar so loud in Uganda. According to a 2014 report by the Parliamentary Committee on Health, a mammoth 70,000 to 100,000 Ugandans die annually from malaria. Even worse, 50% of the deaths are among children below five years. The report told of over 10 million cases reported each year, in a country of about 37 million people. But also, the 2011 Uganda Demographic Health Survey revealed that 17 million people had ever been bed-ridden with malaria.
